English Language Learner (ELL)

The purpose of the ELL program is to ensure that limited English proficient (LEP) students master English and meet the same expected achievement standards as their peers.  Services are provided to students grades K-12.  The Lee’s Summit ELL program is very diverse; there are over 38 languages with the highest numbers being Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, and Arabic.

Elementary

ELL services are considered a district program and direct services are offered only at specific schools.  Eligible students who live in other attendance areas will receive transportation to ELL sites.   Students receive English Language instruction from certified Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).  Teachers provide instruction through pushing into grade-level classrooms or pulling students out for more intensive instruction as needed. Additionally, paraprofessionals provide support to students in both the grade level and ELL classrooms.  Teachers follow the district’s curriculum with an added focus on English Language development.  Students qualifying for English Language services are offered the opportunity to attend the ELL site based on the "Residence" school feeder system below.
